(Expert Advice from Alicia Morgan) You Are A Work in Progress Not a Failure
It has taken quite some time for my mind to wrap itself around the idea that although I am not perfect I am a wonderful work in progress. Discovering the best that you can be as a person involves many trials and tribulations and most of all a great deal of patience building. I remember since I was a child that I was a lover of words. I enjoyed reading, writing and the performing arts more than anything. However, somewhere along the path to my true passions I pursued a degree in engineering and considered writing just an ordinary hobby. I have worked in the field of engineering almost ten years and have been actively pursuing my ambitions as a writer for the last three. The first time I shared my writing for consideration for publication I received a note that said, “You are not the caliber of writer that we are looking for. We strongly suggest you take some writing courses and find great writers to model yourself after.” I must admit when I first read those words I was devastated and thought perhaps my writing should be something I kept to myself from that point on. Looking back on it all those words empowered my life because I learned that my God given talent is neither a mistake nor a failure if it places me outside of my comfort level at times. There is no standard navigation package for your life but resilience will help you in those moments where the path you are taking appears to be leading to a perceived failure. I am on my way to the destiny that my passions will lead me. Overall, I am a work in progress and not a failure and so are you.
