LEADERSHIP: The Fear of Failure
I was in a leadership meeting this morning and someone brought up the topic of fearing failure. Sometimes, we fear making mistakes or failing because of what others will think of us or being labeled as a failure. However, there is another side of failure that causes us to shut down in getting so lost in how much damage or the depth of the failure we believe we caused. We focus on the wrongdoing and punish ourselves, often believing that God is punishing us as well. We respond by simply shutting down and not moving forward. Because we cannot forgive ourselves or cannot believe the Lord will ever forgive us, we hold onto the past, the guilt, the wrongdoing, and the weight of the world.
The reality is, we cannot change the past. However, unlike people, God does not hang our wrongdoing over our head to remind us how jacked up we are. That is why Jesus died as the perfect sacrifice for ALL of our failures and sins once and for all. When we fail miserably we can know that while we can never redo the past, we can confess our wrongdoings to Him and then…..rise up and do the next thing He is asking us to do. Be encouraged. Life is a journey not a destination.
