Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.
This dramatic verse from William Ernest Henley’s immortal poem, Invictus, rumbles with the essence of will. Considering the recent major motion picture of the same name in conjunction with the FIFA World Cup presently concluding in South Africa, images of Invictus imposing force surrounds our collective consciousness. These images may evoke emotion, but demonstrating will requires determination and purpose.
In real life, will demands pain, sweat and sacrifice. Poetry, motion pictures or soccer are passive portraits of will. Emotion, art, competition may provide a peek into applying will. However, will reveals its naked power when projected toward a struggle, a goal and an accomplishment! Whether overcoming oppression, competing for honor or asserting one’s individual identity, a forceful clash erupts. Hence, the most commonly attached adjective describing will is strong.
An individual or an organization can set a goal; then draft a plan. The subsequent accomplishment appears to be a result of successful execution. This process posseses logic, but lacks passion. Neither, the goal, the plan nor the execution actually delivers the result. The singular will of the individual or the organization births the result. Great ideas are common. Brilliant campaigns are cliche. Success comes from an unyielding assault on the goal as delivered by the contributors will!
Determination is an ingredient of will. Conviction and desire are, as well. Once the mixture is heated in the hearth of purpose and skill, accomplishing goals are inevitable. It is a recipe. Projects, dreams, aspirations float aimlessly in the hearts and minds of all types of people. A strong will is required for them to yield tangible results. Add the ingredients of will to your next assignment, or your next wish. Set a goal. Impose your will on the situation. Look inside yourself or among your team for Henley’s unconquerable soul. And, feast on your success!
