Questions To think About- If the Evangelical Church Has the Answer, Why Is there so Much Hurt Inside It’s Walls?
Let me open this post by saying that I do not have a factual answering to that question. Since the fall of Adam and Eve, with sin and death entering the world, we have been hurting each other and been the victim of hurt in and outside of the church. The reality is the church is full of human, fallible, wounded, hurting people who are capable of doing selfish and hurtful things because of following the desires of the flesh. The difference between those who call themselves followers of Christ and those who are not followers is that those who are can choose NOT to follow those desires and lean on the Holy Spirit to lead them. People who have not accepted Christ can only follow their nature to sin, no matter how “nice or positive” it may look to society.
In any case, the question comes back to those who say they have accepted Christ. I have heard or gone to more funerals of young people who have committed suicide who have been members of the church body within the past year than ever before. Why? I have also been asked to tell my story to church groups and classes yet when I ask others in church to open their lives regarding their pain and struggles, they reply that their lives are fine. That may be the case. However, I wonder if part of the problem has to do with our unwillingness to be vulnerable and open about who and where we are. Perhaps, we view Jesus and Christianity through the glasses of what we think they should be instead of the picture of balance that the bible shows.
Jesus was not a doormat of love who allowed Himself to be stepped on and used. However, He allowed Himself to be a willing servant for the purpose of opening Himself for others. He was healthy in His emotions and allowed Himself to cry, mourn, get angry, laugh and show disappointment.
Perhaps, others would run to us within the church if they saw us being more like the One we follow. It is not in our strength, but in our weakness that He is strong and works through us. Just saying.
Take care,
Charlotte
