No matter how we grew up, as humans, we desire to hide the mistakes, failures, hurts, habits and the hang-ups in our lives. We are all human and walk among the wounded.
The problem is not that we were wounded or even that we failed or were harmed. The problem is that we often buy into the belief that there is a problem with being wounded or failing. Somewhere between the insecurity of a father’s rage, the immaturity of a school mate’s shout, or the good intentions of an overly protective relative we picked up the belief that who we are is attached to what we did or what we feel.
Somewhere in our lives we exchanged what we felt for who we were, and in that moment our dreams and hopes became too hard to capture. Our hopes slowly turned into things we could easily obtain. Our trust was relegated to a world we believed we could control. Maybe the feelings of being so overwhelmed with shame and guilt from the past allowed us to believe there was nothing we could add to the world or maybe the world would be better without us. Yeah, I get that.
So often we jump to the conclusion that being wounded is equal to being unusable, unfixable, permanent, and shameful, something we should hide or not talk about, a weakness, a flaw or something unnatural. The fact is we are all wounded to various degrees simply because we are fallible humans capable of hurting others and being hurt.
Being wounded simply means we are not perfect and because of being human and living life, situations and experiences have happened that affect the way we view our world. That impact created a believed or real obstacle that stands between where we are and where we want to be (our dreams and visions).
We can easily tell of the present scars and issues resulting from the past but often we don’t connect our behaviors and choices to past hurts and messages we’ve received. Like fear, the dream stealer of the past did not suddenly appear. This dream stealer has had years of practice and experience in holding back potential in our lives.
Realizing we have wounds and dream-stealers from the past does not mean we are weak, less than, problematic or an outcast. Instead, we can realize we are not perfect, while being real with others, and allow our experiences to push us toward our potential instead of holding us in captive. It is difficult but it is possible.
You can do this!
Take care,
Charlotte
