Four men were sitting in the lunch room of their company discussing the news that employee layoffs would begin soon.
Man #1 said, “I’m, scared. The CEO, Mr. Fear has been threatening us with our jobs. I don’t know what I’m going to do if I lose my job. Who is going to want to hire me at my age?”
Man #2 said, “I’m young so I’m not worried about someone hiring me.” Mr. Fear has got me scared about my job. However, I’m worried about Mr. Control who announced that I might not be able to do what I want to do. I might have to work under a different manager who I don’t like if I stay. After all I have done for this company, I deserve to be treated better than that.”
Man #3 said, “I would be okay going to a different department if they kept me on. I’m really scared of Mr. Fear’s threats about losing my job and what will happen to me. But I would be fine though. I just don’t want to make trouble. I should pretend that everything is okay, try to be what others want me to be, and work harder to be nice and like everybody like Mr. Lie told me in our success workshop. If I do that everything will work out alright.”
Man #4 stood up and said, “Yeah, I heard from all three of those guys. Fortunately, I went through Leadership Training classes with Mrs. Courage who told me a few things. She told me that Mr. Fear only could yell false evidence that appeared real but had no proof. He made people fearful of the future so they could do nothing in the present. She told me that Mr. Control was the most to be pitied because his desire for control was due to being so out of control. Finally, Mr. Lie was the easiest to conquer and the hardest to push down because he dressed up like something nice yet made a fool of the one needing freedom from him. Yep, I heard from all of those guys. So instead of being fearful, I’m putting out resumes, contacts, talking to recruiters and doing what I need to do. I don’t know what my future holds but Mr. Fear doesn’t hold it.”
Fear is a choice. I, like you, have to make the choice to allow fear to be the master of our lives or to take back our lives. We often go through mental gymnastics in our head of what a situation will be like or what will happen before we have taken our first step and disqualify ourselves. Why? Why do we automatic look for the negative and reason something will never happen and shut down because there will be a cost or something will hurt? Is something only worth having if it is easy, within reach, free or without effort. That’s for the Madoffs, the Charles Ponzis, the people in jail, the users who want something for nothing. That’s not you. When was your life supposed to be easy and safe.
Harriet Tubman looked fear, slavery and death in the face and made a choice to say, “Even so, I’m going forward.” The forefathers of this nation looked fear and death in the face to start a new nation and made a choice to say, “Even so, I’m going forward.” Thomas Edison looked fear and failure in the face when he invented the phonograph, the incandescent light bulb, the motion picture and patented 1,093 inventions and made a choice to say, “Even so, I’m going forward.” Martin Luther (the King) looked fear, prejudice, and death in the face and made a choice to say, “Even so, I’m going forward.” Our military, fire, and police forces daily look fear and death in the face for our freedom and rights and makes a choice to say, “Even so, I’m going forward.”
My question to you…what fear are you facing in your life that you can look at and say, “Even so, I’m going forward!” This is your time. Yes, you might fail a little bit, you might fall a little while. But you will be further than you are at now and closer to where you will be. Don’t give up. I promise you can do this. I know you can do this. Don’t believe the lie.
